SL-28
History
SL-28 is a Bourbon sub-variety originating from Kenya, that has subsequently spread to other parts of Africa and Latin America.
Developed by the Scott Agriculture Laboratories during the British colonial era in Kenya, SL-28 was selected in 1935 from the Tanganyika Drought Resistance population for commercial development.
Some sources say SL-28 is cross-bred from mutations of French Mission, Mokka and Typica, while others claim it to be a hybrid of Bourbon and Ethiopian Heirloom.
Whichever its genetic composition may be, SL-28 is among the well-regarded varieties in Africa for its good cup quality.
Genetic Trait
Despite its susceptibility to major coffee diseases and relative low productivity, SL-28 stands out for its great taste when grown at high altitude, and its tolerance to drought.
Taste Profile
Bright acidity, intensely citrus, great sweetness and complex flavors are the common characteristics of SL-28.
