What is Roast Level?

Roast level refers to the degree to which your coffee beans have been roasted.

As you may be well aware of, roasting is an important process to transform coffee from tasteless green coffee to aromatic and flavorful roasted beans.

Knowing how each Roast Level affects your coffee is an easy first step in your journey into the world of specialty coffee.

How does Roast Levels affect the taste?

The tasting clues below outline the general taste profile of each Roast Level.

Tasting Clues

Light Roast

Acidity: Bright
Body: Light
Notes:
Origin flavors prominent

Medium Roast

Acidity: Medium
Body: Medium
Notes:
Balanced with both origin and roasty flavors.

Dark Roast

Acidity: Low
Body: Heavy
Notes:
Roasty flavors prominent

When you taste roast levels, it is important to note that the roasting profile of one roaster may differ from another roaster.

A coffee that is considered a medium roast to a roaster may be labelled as dark roast by another roaster due to differing standards.

Moreover, other variables such as the variety, processing method, and origin of a coffee may also cloud your taste assessment of roast level.
